Health Insurance Rate
Over the last few years the average health insurance rate has risen by up to 20 percent annually. The reasons for this include such things as the spiraling costs of medical care, research into novel treatment techniques, and the costs of advertising and administration levied by the insurance companies. So, with this in mind, how do you keep your health insurance rates as low as possible without compromising on coverage?
Choose group coverage
If your employer provides a group coverage option then it is often much cheaper to buy into this type of health insurance than into an individual policy. Generally speaking the health insurance rates on group coverage policies are very high as they offer comprehensive coverage for a lower than average premium.
In addition, you’ll normally find that all members of your immediate family are covered as well, even when it comes to dental and vision. Buying a private family insurance policy is not only more expensive, it also often means adding dental and vision as supplementary plans at an additional cost. In fact, employee group coverage is possibly the best way to ensure an affordable family health insurance rate.
Group coverage is paid for in part by your employer and so you only need to pay a fraction of the actual premium. This means that you may be able to purchase other supplements on top, like chiropractic services, maternity, for the same overall price as an individual health insurance plan.
Only buy what you need to
A second way to keep your health insurance rates low is to only buy, or cover, the services you think you’ll need. So for example, if you have perfect teeth and only attend one dental check-up per year then it is probably a waste of money buying a dental supplement. Similarly, if you are in very good health and rarely need to visit a physician then it might be more beneficial to buy catastrophic health insurance rather than a traditional, comprehensive plan.
Pay a higher deductible
If you choose to pay a higher annual deductible then you can often reduce your health insurance rate by a considerable amount. You’ll need to consider how much you use your health insurance before doing this though as it could work out a lot more expensive for you if you make regular claims.
Buying into group coverage is probably the easiest way to ensure affordable health insurance rates, however there are other options. Individual plans with very low rates should be checked thoroughly as it may be that the health insurance rate of the plan is as low as the premium and simply not worth the money you pay. Decide what you want your plan to include and compare several health insurance rate quotes before making a decision.
